Acupuncture originates from Traditional Chinese Medicine. Now Western Medical Research has shown that by inserting fine needles into the body, at particular points, there is stimulation of nerves and release of substances which can change the body’s function.
In cancer this effect, the release of serotonin and endorphins, can act as pain relief, reduce emotional stress and enhance wellbeing. Some other symptoms which may be reduced are:
- Dry mouth
- Hot flushes (as a side effect of cancer treatment)
The effect on the individual is varied and multifactorial.
As with all physiotherapy treatment sessions you will initially be assessed with a health, lifestyle and medical questionnaire. This may include sleep patterns, diet and how you feel emotionally. You will receive an individual and personalised treatment programme. The number and frequency of treatment sessions will vary depending upon individual needs and response to needling. There are some slight risks with acupuncture but these are of very low percentage and any possible side effects are of a temporary nature.
